The Secret Life of Unsold Flowers

Introduction:

In the world of floristry, where beauty blooms and emotions are delicately entwined, there lies a hidden story behind the scenes – what happens to the flowers that don't find a home or sold? Beyond the vibrant displays and fragrant bouquets, florists can face the dilemma of excess inventory. But within this dilemma is path of creativity, and resourcefulness.

These are the 2 basic things to consider:

1. First you need to ensure your flowers will last and be in the best condition for the customers so you avoid any waste, so you need to make sure your delivery is well looked after. Proper inspection of flower deliveries (freshness and general condition of the flowers on arrival to the shop). Proper refrigeration at the correct temperature in the cooling unit once arrived (varies according to the flowers being kept).  Proper storage and protection from light. Sometimes, sunlight shortens the life of flowers depending on the type of flower. Proper cutting methods and watering frequency. Just some of the considerations.

Proper cutting is necessary to help the flower stems take up water. Proper watering amounts and intervals. Water needs to be refreshed regularly to stave off bacterial infection.

Creativity in Action:

2. Proper ordering is the cornerstone of any successful floristry business. Most suppliers will let you order until mid night for next day delivery for example, but life's unexpected twists can lead to surplus flowers. From weddings postponed due to family tragedies to fundraisers disrupted by unforeseen circumstances, florists are no strangers to sudden unforeseen circumstances. It is in these moments of abundance that creativity has to truly blossom.  In my own experience, I've embraced surplus flowers as an opportunity. Rather than letting flowers languish, I've delighted customers by surprising them with unexpected upgrades to their orders. Whether it's adding extra flowers to existing arrangements or enhancing weekly church service bouquets, these gestures not only brighten someone's day but also ensure that no bloom goes to waste.

Conclusion:

The story of unsold flowers is not one of waste. But embracing creativity, and understanding your flowers, florists can also transform surplus blooms into symbols generosity. So, the next time you admire a radiant bouquet or delicate arrangement, remember the journey it undertook – from seed to stem, and from florist to recipient.
